Jim Kelso

 

James D. Kelso, J.D., LL.M. (Health Law)

 

In 1997, Jim Kelso began practicing Health Law at an academic medical center consisting of a 900 bed teaching hospital, a children’s hospital, a level 1 trauma center and a fully incorporated faculty practice.  During this time, he has provided legal services for faculty, staff and administrators on many different Health Law related issues impacting clinical, educational and research activities.    

 

In December 2000, Kelso completed a Master of Laws program focused in Health Law (known as an LLM) at the University of Houston Law Center’s Health Law and Policy Institute.  The Health Law and Policy Institute has been ranked first in the country by US News & World Reports in 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004. 

 

In March 2001, Kelso took a position in health care compliance.  Health care compliance entails the proactive management of numerous risks that arise from federal, state and administrative law that affect clinical, educational, and research activities of physicians and their health care partners.   

 

In December 2005, Kelso became Board Certified in Health Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization.  As of December 2006, there are roughly 50 attorneys in Texas with this certification and specialized knowledge.

 

Throughout his career, Kelso has cultivated a continuing interest in helping physicians address the needs of their active practices and Kelso has also developed a unique skill set to help newer physicians address the uncomfortable aspects of negotiating their employment contracts.
